The first aid project is a fun, interactive project that introduces participants to the basic skills needed to apply first aid wherever and whenever needed with competence and confidence. Learn how to recognize an emergency, how to stop bleeding, treat sprains, strains and fractures, the steps to take to help someone with a head injury or allergic reaction and much more! We will learn what to do, practice how to do it and you will finish the project with your own personal first aid kit to take home.

Ever wanted to understand the basics of silk screen printing? Did you know that screen printing is is all around you? Bring your own art and designs to life and get to experience what it’s like to work in a real silk screen studio. Students will learn the basics of silk screen printing and create their own printed finished t-shirt, cards and/or flyers.

This is a continuation of the Fall Plant Potions project, but new members are encouraged to join! At each class, we will be learning about a Spring plant, creating several remedies and ending with tea. We will focus on chickweed, violet and lemonbalm during our 3 sessions.

Come create a shadow puppet production, from start to finish! We will be making the puppets, constructing the puppet theater, writing the script and filming the production for entry into this year’s Alameda County Film Fest in April. The theme is Animals, so bring your creative spirit and get ready to have fun!

AGES: All ages welcome, members under 10 years old will make puppets, ages 10+ will focus on construction, writing and filming

Would you like to go on a treasure hunt? Join the geocaching project! Geocaching is a worldwide treasure hunt where you use GPS coordinates to find hidden containers around your neighborhood. We’ll search for geocaches while exploring cool locations in our community, and at the end of the project, we’ll hide a cache of our own for other geocachers to find.

AGES:  All, max 6 kids

In this project, we will learn all about rabbits! This includes different breeds, raising rabbits and rabbit care and showing rabbits. The project will meet first in Emeryville, and then include a field trip to Ruth’s Rabbits (the project leader’s rabbitry) as well as a trip to a rabbit show, either in Dixon in early January or Turlock in late February.

This project is run by a leader from Tassajara 4-H.

Intended for younger members in our 4-H community, in this baking class we will focus on the building blocks of baking and kitchen safety. We will make cookies, cakes and even some sweets that don’t need to bake at all! Think of this as a very fun science class where you get to eat your experiments!

AGES:  5-9 years old, max 4 kids

PROJECT FEE:  $30 estimated (covered by club)

This is a two-day project with two field trips (3 hours each with snack). The first field trip will be to an art gallery in Berkeley where we will meet with an artist who photographs flower pods. Each pod is designed in such a smart way so that it can keep seeds protected and, when the time comes, can spill seeds out for its future offspring for next year. We will collect our own pods on the walk through the neighborhood and produce our own close-up photographs of flower pods. The second trip will be to the UCB Botanical Gardens and we will learn about how carnivorous plants are designed in order to attract and catch their food (flies, small insects, and curious children).

We will continue to learn about the power of plants! We will experiment with creating plant medicines, teas and balms to heal wounds, soothe tummies, moisturize lips and all kinds of fun stuff! No previous experience necessary.

Ever wanted to understand the basics of making fabric? Did you know that looms were the forerunners of computers?  Learn to weave. Students will learn the basics of weaving on a tapestry and multi-shaft loom and have fun making their own piece of cloth.

Make gifts for the holidays!  Join us as we have fun making various crafts, which may include woodsy fort/fairy houses, small stuffed animals, painted glassware and wood items, soaps and other toiletries and more.

Participants will learn about website publishing, and the technology behind the Emeryville 4-H website. Throughout the year, each participant will write articles about their 4-H projects and events, and work with project leaders to publish their articles on the Emeryville 4-H website. Participants will learn about the technology that makes the website work, including high-level internet concepts and basic HTML.

Come join fearless backpacking/hiking leaders in learning about how to plan for an outdoor mountain adventure. Then take your knowledge out with the 4-H group on a ~4 hour East Bay Regional Park excursion.

Cooking at the Senior Center:  In this project, students will have the opportunity to pick and create their own savory and sweet meal concoctions with recipes that they choose.  Leading this will be professional cooking instructor and nutritionist Maria Acosta.  Let’s get cooking!

Get acquainted with leathercraft!  Learn how to cut cut a pattern into a piece of leather, use stamps to shade and decorate the leather, condition your leather and even add color. We’ll start with simple projects like coasters, but kids who enjoy it can move on to more complex projects.

*  We will be driving in one or two cars on Jan 27 and Feb 10 from a single location in Berkeley/Emeryville/Oakland. Planning to leave about 12:15pm, return to North Bay around 3:30p.

If you are interested in learning how to build and control electronic creations, this is the project for you!  We will go over a variety of components (e.g. LEDs, motors, buzzers, switches, and potentiometers) and code using an IDE and microcontroller provided by Arduino, an open-source platform. We will use what we’ve learned to make several projects such as light-up cards, motorized contraptions, and more. All experience levels welcome.

Laptop required, Mac or PC, not Chromebooks (please let us know if this is an issue).

This project offers an introduction to free-hand cursive writing and elements of intricate collage technique. In the second half of the class, we will create art pieces using hand lettering and collage to make a beautiful decorated and framed quotation.
